Where and What is Door County, Wisconson USA?

Door County: Traditions of a Rugged Pioneer Past©

Door County, Wisconsin...the "thumb" of Wisconsin's hand shape sticks out into the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay.  It became the 15th of Wisconsin's 72 counties in 1851. Door County has 250 miles of shoreline and is divided by water into three parts -- five small islands (two reached by ferry boat), an island peninsula, and a part of the mainland stretching for approximately 20 miles south of Sturgeon Bay, the county's only city (pop. under 10,000).  Most of the county is connected to North America only by ferry boats and by crossing either of two bridges (soon to be a third).

There are 25 villages, towns, and townships in the county, most of which have populations of only a few hundred souls each. Largest portions of the native population are Norwegian and Belgian. To find out more, please click on "Place Names/Meanings" at the bottom of this page.

Door County is a place of mystery, beauty, unique history, and fading charm (due to the ruination by "deeee-velopers" that is occurring in such places all over the globe). It is a difficult place to live; survival here is a struggle, but those who have managed for generations, and those to whom it became home earlier in the past century, have come to think of the area with an ever present sense of reverence for the past and dread for the future. Maintaining respect for it has become a full-time battle.

Traditions is an hour-long visual presentation of Door County...its past and its present. It is viewed as often in school classrooms as it is in private homes. It is as entertaining as it is educational, and was made with sincere hope for preserving our treasured past and way of life for all time, so that we may never forget.

This video contains 360 years of history, and all four seasons of exquisite scenery. An original musical score and lively narration join with hundreds of archival photos, 1920s and ‘30s film, and contemporary color footage to tell the stories of one of Wisconsin’s most remarkable regions. Traditions is made for all ages...for those who live here...and for all who visit and have wanted to know more about this remarkable place.  It was the first visual history ever made about any Wisconsin regions
